Whether or not she sewed the very first American Flag has never been proven, but we do know Betsy Ross frequently sewed flags for the government and her name will forever be synonymous with our stars and stripes.
As we take a moment to celebrate our nation's birthday this weekend, we thought it would be fun to highlight some great American creators--anyone from Betsy Ross, whose penchant for the needle and thread lead to an American treasure to your neighbor down the street who makes quilts and baby clothes for foster kids.
- Betsy Ross - A woman who owned her own upholstery business. Legend has it that the widowed Ross met with George Washington, George Ross and Robert Morris at her Philadelphia upholstery business, which was said to have resulted in the sewing of the first stars and stripes. We're willing to be she's a woman who really knew how to use her embroidery scissors.
- Ralph Lauren - This Bronx born designer started making some cash after school where he sold ties to classmates.His brand grew in popularity as it was centered around upscale American lifestyle.
- Jason Wu - He might be young, but this designer's star rose quickly after Michelle Obama chose him as one of her inauguration designers
- Frank Lloyd Wright - This American architect appreciated the organic elements of nature before it was en vogue. In 1991 the American Architect Institute named him the greatest American architect of all time.
