This weekend was a perfect example of just how much I value my kitchen shears. I used them three different times while cooking two recipes, washing them by hand twice to continue using them.
- I used them to open a particularly difficult package of bacon.
- I used them to clean and dice chicken.
- I used them to shred basil.
I enjoy cooking and spend a lot of time in the kitchen and cannot place enough emphasis on the value of a pair of kitchen shears. They make trimming the fat from chicken unbelievably easy and dicing the chicken even easier. And shredding herbs like basil would be a tedious task if it had to be done with a knife or by hand.
Do make sure that you’re investing in a high quality pair of scissors. While this may seem obvious, it’s not always as easy as you think. I purchased my first pair of kitchen scissors at a cheap price at a regular department store. Unfortunately, they were not adept at cutting through meat (my primary usage) and within months the handle was loose and eventually came off.
The end result? I spent more buying two pair of scissors than I would have spent had I invested in one quality pair.
If you have an herb garden, I would suggest a pair of shredding scissors, as they cut the work of snipping basil, parsley and other herbs even easier.
