Holiday scissors to make your season bright

We know it's not even Thanksgiving yet, but this blast of cooler weather has us thinking about the holidays. Besides trimming the tree, one of my favorite holiday activities is wrapping gifts. There's so many cool and even unconventional ways to wrap holiday gifts, and you don't even need to be that crafty to pull it off.

1. Purse Shaped Package - This is super easy, but it looks so different and fun. It's heavy, textured paper folded around a tissue-wrapped gift. Add some colorful ribbon and you have something that's out of the box.

2. Paper Cones - If you're looking for a nostalgic way to wrap some candy or tiny treats, try using a paper cone with fabric appliques. 

3. Fabric - Ok, it's not actually fabric. But did you know you could photocopy fabric and come out with a fabulous result?

Holiday scissors add fun to decorating

There are lots of great ways to entice children to help decorate the house for the holidays. There's music and baked goods, but they'll really love decorating the house with something they made themselves.

Holiday countdown rings are a fun and easy way to get the kids in the spirit of the season.

What you'll need:

• Colored construction paper--enough for the number of days there are until your holiday

• Stapler or glue stick
• Holiday scissors (like this cute ginger bread cookie)
• A special topper made from heavier card stock paper. It can be a drawing or a holiday word

Have your children use the colorful construction paper to cut out strips of paper 6 inches long and 4 inches wide. They'll need to cut out enough to equal the amount of days until your holiday.

They can glue the links together alternating colors or making a fun pattern. Glue the final ring to the special topper you made. Now you have a holiday countdown! You can tape it to a wall or just above a door and your children can rip off a ring each day until your holiday.

Ideas for easy holiday wreaths for children and parents

Wreaths add festive flavor to homes year round. You can craft your own wreaths this holiday season with little fuss and a lot of decorative flair.

Three wreath themes you'll love:

* Sports wreaths - You can pay homage to your alma mater during college football season or show your pride for your baseball team in the World Series. Buy a faux wreath base at a craft store, attach ribbon and flowers in your team colors and add beads and even a holiday ornament as an embellishment.

* Halloween Wreaths - Say Boo to trick0or-treaters with black and orange ribbon. You can purchase Halloween buttons and tiny characters on the wreath for more spooky charm.

*Holiday Wreaths - craft stores make it easy. They sell the ribbon and embellishments to your wreath truly pop. Want to bring the kids in on the action? Help them make their own holiday wreaths while you craft your own.

Using festive holiday scissors, the kids can cut strips of green construction paper. Cut out the center of a paper plate and glue the green strips around the paper plate base. Add stickers, red construction paper "berries," ribbon, glitter glue and more for a truly special decoration the kids will be proud of.
